You can use our prefolded mini toober model of ß-globin to demonstrate protein structure, the important role of hemoglobin in oxygen transport, and the effects of a single amino acid mutation on a protein. Some teachers purchase it in conjunction with the B-Globin Folding Kit to use as a sample model. The model also reinforces lessons introduced in our Amino Acid Starter Kit©.
1 Prefolded ß-Globin mini toober model
1 Valine side chain to demonstrate the sickle cell anemia mutation
This mini toober model of the ß-globin protein is composed of 3 differently-colored mini toobers that are joined together and shaped to approximate the “topology” of the ß-globin protein. It represents an alpha-carbon backbone model of the protein.
The Molecule of the Month by scientist, author and artist Dr. David Goodsell includes an introduction to the structure and function of the chosen molecule and a discussion of its relevance to human health and welfare. Molecule of the Month articles are frequently referred to by teachers, students and researchers.
Open computer Jmol images of the whole ß-Globin protein model, or segments of the ß-Globin protein model.
