Modeling Mini Toobers

Our versatile Modeling Mini Toobers provide hands-on learning experiences in many science disciplines and should be part of your classroom’s collection of 3-D science materials.

Biology and chemistry students can use the flexible, foam mini toobers to model DNA or tRNA or create protein structures while following the principles of chemistry. Physics students can investigate sound and other waves. The mini toobers have a soft wire core and are 4’ (122 cm) long. One red and one blue end cap are included with each mini toober. Use end caps to designate N terminus and C terminus in protein folding or 3’ and 5’ ends in DNA model. Push pins are not included. Proteins are large, linear polymers of amino acids that spontaneously fold into complex 3D shapes. Although protein structure appears to be very complex, the chemical properties that determine protein structure are relatively simple. The Protein Folding with 15 Tack and a 4-Foot Mini Toober Activity allows your students to explore how the unique chemical properties of the amino acids determine the final shape of a protein.

Teacher Tip

Bend your mini toober in any direction you want, just avoid tight twisting, or squinching, to prevent compression.  Remove endcaps and lightly coil your mini toober at the end of the activity and the foam will regain its shape.
