Enzymes in Action Kit© Molecule of the Month

The Molecule of the Month by scientist, author and artist Dr. David Goodsell includes an introduction to the structure and function of the chosen molecule and a discussion of its relevance to human health and welfare. Molecule of the Month articles are frequently referred to by teachers, students and researchers.

Enzymes in Action Kit© Student Handout & Key

The Enzymes in Action Kit© allows your students to explore how enzymatic reactions occur. They will use the model pieces in the kit to simulate enzymatic actions, explain enzymatic specificity, investigate 2 types of enzyme inhibitors used in regulating enzymatic activity, and examine how an enzyme may affect activation energy.

Teacher Tips

The two enzymes may be set up simultaneously to compare and contrast the catabolic and anabolic processes.

The enzymes can be used to show the subtle differences between the lock-and-key theory of enzyme action and induced fit.

Colors may fade. Consider storing foam kits in a dark location such as a closet, cabinet or drawer.

"The exclamations of I get it! when the noncompetitive inhibitor changed the shape of the active site thus preventing the substrate from binding, were priceless!"
