Hemolysin is a protein produced by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. Seven subunits of hemolysin assemble into a heptamer complex that embeds itself into the membrane of a red blood cell. Each subunit contributes 2 strands to a 14-stranded beta-barrel that is inserted into the membrane to create a hole. Hemoglobin protein then leaks out of the red blood cells, making the iron available to the bacteria to support their growth.
