Activities and Recommendations

1. Model different types of chromosomes.
2. Demonstrate how chromosomes are comprised of DNA by connecting the nucleotides to the chromosomes using the scaling graphics.
3. Model mitosis and meiosis using the foam parts.
4. Model crossing over at the microscopic scale with the foam parts.  
5. Use the foam nucleotides to model Punnett Squares. Assemble the contributions from each parent. Model one quadrant at a time by moving the correct sequences from each parent.

  1. Download the PowerPoint or if you're using Google Slides, go to File, click Make a copy and save the Entire presentation
  2. Use the activity as it is or make it your own!  You can:
    • Edit the instructions and questions and add more.
    • Rearrange the slides.
    • Use the blank slide at the end to add content. (Duplicate the slide if you need more than one.)
  3. Assign the activity to your students through your school’s digital platform. Ask them to save and submit their finished work in slide format or as a PDF, using the naming conventions appropriate to your school or class.
