Map of the Human ß-Globin Gene© Teacher Notes

The β-Globin Gene Exercise© serves as an example of how we can encourage our students to ask thoughtful questions.  Our approach is to challenge students with a specific task — in this case finding the β-globin gene — in the absence of the explanations that normally precede an exercise such as this.  It is important to let your students work on this challenge and struggle a little from time to time as they discover the answers to:

  • Which of the two strands of DNA is the coding strand?
  • Why are there three different amino acid sequences listed under the DNA?
  • What does the * symbol mean?

Complete notes can be found at the web address included in your product shipment. CONTACT US if you need that web address emailed to you. (We only share these resources with teachers who purchase the Map of the Human β-Globin Gene©.)
