Neuromuscular Synapse Poster© Journal Articles by Dr. David Goodsell
Scientist, author and artist Dr. David S. Goodsell recently published From Atoms to Cells: Using Mesoscale Landscapes to Construct Visual Narratives in collaboration with Margaret Franzen and Tim Herman from the Milwaukee School of Engineering Center for BioMolecular Modeling. The article explores how mesoscale illustrations integrate data from molecular and cellular biology; how methods for building and visualizing 3D mesoscale models are being developed; and how mesoscale illustrations provide important context in molecular biology education.

When writing his book, The Machinery of Life1, scientist, author and artist Dr. David S. Goodsell created an illustration of a neuromuscular synapse, showing all macromolecules and acetylcholine at a magnification of one million times.
As the book was being printed, Dr. Goodsell began working with 3D Molecular Designs to make the illustrations available to science teachers for their classrooms.
In this 2009 article published by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Dr. Goodsell describes the poster in detail, providing:
Information on the science and technology behind the images
Descriptions of the proteins and other molecular structures featured in the poster
You can use the article to lead more in-depth discussions with your students, or have your students use it as a reference when researching various structures in the poster.
